Dear Mr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam,

I am concerned about the plight of the long-tailed macaque (Macaca fascicularis) in Mauritius as a result of their exploitation for the research industry.

In particular, I want to draw attention to the suffering caused by the trapping, breeding, unnatural captivity and export of the long-tailed macaque. Mauritius is now the world’s second largest supplier of monkeys for research internationally and the nature, size and scale of the industry raise welfare issues.

I support the Danish Forsøgsdyrenes Værn efforts to raise concerns about this trade. I appeal to you, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, to take immediate action and lead the way by putting an end to this appalling cruelty and ban the capture and export of primates.
